Throughout my early education, my literacy classes always had inspired me. Learning to read was easy for me because of the quality of teaching I had over me as well as a lot of help from home with my parents and older sibling. The overall support provided a base for me to first learn the basics of reading and writing the language, and since that support made learning easier, I had the time to enjoy reading and writing beyond the lessons from class that were put in front of me. From early on, reading was a hobby. The more books read, the better. I wasn’t the fastest reader, and I am still not. I like to read the words at a moderate rate to make sure I can read and still understand by just reading the text once.
I believe reading is one of the most important aspects of education. It is the foundation for all other knowledge to be absorbed. To me, the first step to a successful education and life is learning to read. After that goal is accomplished, finding a way to really enjoy reading is another important factor in education. I believe that when someone learns to enjoy reading, they will find it easier to enjoy learning in general.
Along with reading is of course, writing. Personally, I get more pleasure from writing then reading. For me, writing allows me to express emotions, organize my personal thoughts, study information, and get my opinion and beliefs out in the open. Of course, without writing there would be a reason to read at all. They come in hand in hand. Personally, writing is my most enjoyable aspect in my years of school, from K-today. The first time I realized how much I loved to write was in 2nd grade. My teacher, every week would make us cut out an object, such as an apple or owl. On that object, we would have to write a creative story to go along with it. To me, this wasn’t you everyday school activity. It was a time to be completely creative and find a voice within the classroom. Finally, we were able to stand out on our own ideas amongst the other monotone lessons. Writing isn’t like math, where you either have it down or you don’t. Writing isn’t like science where the experiment works or not. Writing is an opportunity to take a clean piece of paper and create a personal masterpiece. Also, writing is unique because everyone’s style, techniques, and ideas are all so diverse. We are always taught about how diversity within a classroom setting is so important to acknowledge. By reading each other’s writings and seeing the differences and similarities, the diversity within that classroom can be truly appreciated. Also, another thing I learned early on is that I can basically write forever J
Overall, I am very passionate about literacy, both reading and writing. I am passionate because I enjoy reading and writing at a personal level, but also because I see literacy as the foundation of education and finding yourself.
