I had someone say to me once after they found out I was a musician, “All I can play is the radio”. Even a musician can also play a record, or CD, or tape, or digital audio file. No instrument required.
But seriously, it is possible to practice, (kinda) using your imagination. I listen to a recording of a piece that I want to play, and practice fingerings anywhere, without an instrument. But, this isn’t actually playing music, either. And it isn’t really practice.
