The olfactory nerves (cranial nerve I) are one of a kind in that their cell bodies lie in the olfactory epithelium (the surface film covering the upper pieces of the nasal sections), each sending a nerve fiber back to the cerebrum.
The olfactory nerve is tactile in nature and starts on the olfactory mucosa in the upper piece of the nasal cavity. From the olfactory mucosa, the nerve (really many little nerve fascicles) goes up through the cribriform plate of the ethmoid issue that remains to be worked out the outer layer of the mind.
