CONCERTO- is a multi-movement work designed for an instrumental soloist and orchestra. It is a classical form of music intended primarily to emphasize the individuality of the solo instrument and to exhibit the virtuosity and interpretative abilities of the performer.
Concerto, plural concerti or concertos, since about 1750, a musical composition for instruments in which a solo instrument is set off against an orchestral ensemble. The soloist and ensemble are related to each other by alternation, competition, and combination.
Today the term concerto usually refers to a musical work in which one solo instrument is accompanied by an orchestra. The concerto first arose in the baroque with the concerto grosso (Italian for big concert(o)), which contrasted a small group of instruments with the rest of the orchestra.
