1. What does the magnetic stripe pattern represent? Is the magnetic stripe pattern on each side of the ridge equal? Are the ages of rocks on each side of the ridge the same as well?
2. How helpful is the magnetic reversal in the theory of seafloor spreading? Justify your answer.
Answers & Comments
1. Is the magnetic stripe pattern on each side of the ocean ridge equal? Answer: Yep. When lava gets erupted at the mid-ocean ridge axis it cools and turns into hard rock. This creates a symmetrical pattern of magnetic stripes of opposite polarity on either side of mid-ocean ridges.
2. Magnetic reversals occur every so often. When they happen, the Earth's magnetic field reverses its polarity. In other words, north becomes south and south becomes north. Magnetic reversal proves seafloor spreading because we can see the polarity of the Earth's magnetic field in rocks.
