1) What he’s comparing to in the final sentence are the birds. When the young birds grow up, they have one disadvantage; and that is to be a nursing teenager.
2) The insight, for me, is that the bats give birth and take care of their young ones like us. Since bats are considered mammals and we are considered mammals, there’s no mistaking of recognizing it.
